What is premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation(PE) is recognised as a sexual dysfunction where ejaculation occurs very soon after commencing sexual activity. About 30-40% of men come across this dysfunction at some time in their lives. Premature ejaculation can also be a symptom of infertility in men. This condition can affect a man’s relationship and cause increased stress and anxiety. A sense of sexual frustration prevails among those who suffer from premature ejaculation. Premature ejaculation affects only men, happens to most men at some point in their lives, is a common and treatable condition, and requires proper counselling and medication. It affects men of ages between 20 and 55.

Premature ejaculation is also popularly known as rapid ejaculation, premature climax or early ejaculation and is controlled by the central nervous system.

What causes premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation stems from physical and mental conditions. A person who experiences this condition could be affected if they have a poor image of themselves. Body-image issues are a major contributor that affects one’s sexual abilities. Emotional stress, trauma and depression can also lead to premature ejaculation and loss of libido.

Furthermore, it happens to everyone. A man who continues to worry about premature ejaculation is bound to go through it. Even anxiety related to their sexual experience can affect their performance.

On the physical front, abnormal levels of hormones can lead to premature ejaculation. Even inflammation of the prostate and urethra can lead to erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.

Symptoms of premature ejaculation

Symptoms of premature ejaculation are usually self diagnosable. The primary sign is the inability to slow down ejaculation for more than a minute. People may also experience stress, depression, guilt,  performance anxiety, embarrassment, frustration and relationship problems.

Treatment for premature ejaculation

A diet that includes a sufficient amount of zinc and magnesium can help a man increase the time of ejaculation. Foods like soybean, oyster, yogurt, spinach, dark chocolate, garlic, etc. are rich in zinc and magnesium. Exercises like pelvic floor exercises and kegel exercises can also help treat premature ejaculation.
