The types of ultrasound depend upon the organ or the specific area of the body concerned. Therefore, within an ultrasound, there are many variants.
In case of abdominal pain or swelling, ultrasound for the whole abdomen is recommended. The prominent areas of evaluation, in this case, would be the abdominal aorta and other blood vessels of the abdomen, spleen, gallbladder, pancreas, liver, kidneys.
In case of persistent issues in the kidney or bladders then an ultrasound of the KUB (i.e. kidney, urethra, or bladders) is suggested.
A pelvic ultrasound is recommended for detection and/or evaluation of stones in the kidneys and/or urinary bladder.
Ultrasound is also required for the monitoring of the prostate gland in men.
For women, it is performed to monitor the growth and development of the fetus during pregnancy. The areas evaluated are the cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and bladder.
