Genital Lichen Planus – A brief know-how
About
Genital lichen planus is an inflammatory (causing burns) disease which causes an itchy or burning rash, or agonizing purple lesions, on the mouth, arms or legs.
The prevalence of this disease in the general populace is only about 0.1 – 4 %. [3]

-- Can happen to both men and women
-- Isn’t contagious, can’t be passed to a sexual partner.
What causes it is unknown, it may be the result of an autoimmune problem in which the immune system becomes overactive and causes inflammation.
It isn’t affected by an infection, aging or menopause, diet, hygiene practices or sexual activity.
Ages affected – between 20-30: Less often, between 30-40: Most often, 40 and above: Rare
Symptoms
Self – diagnosable:
Symptoms include vaginal discharge, genital itching, and scarring, all of which are reasons to see a gynaecologist/sexologist.
People may experience:
Skin issues – genital itching, scarring; lesions on the penis
Erosions – on the vulva
Constriction of the vaginal opening
Urinary tract irritation
Treatment
Self- Care:
There is no cure for lichen planus, and so its treatment is for symptomatic relief or due to cosmetic reasons.
Medications:
When medical treatment is prosecuted, immediate treatment typically involves corticosteroids.
Additional treatments include retinoids.
