Diagnosed with Folliculitis? Here’s what you need to know.
About
Folliculitis is a common skin condition causing the inflammation of hair follicles.
Folliculitis is common among those with acne. Shaving and use of topical corticosteroid creams can also increase the risk of developing this condition.[1]
● Usually self-treatable
● Usually self-diagnosable
● Lab tests or imaging rarely required
● Short-term: Folliculitis resolves within days to weeks
Folliculitis is usually self-treatable, but for more severe cases you may need to see your doctor.
Symptoms
You will find that the symptoms vary based on the type and severity of folliculitis. Based on these factors, you may have:
● A group of tiny red bumps like pimples, some having whiteheads.
● Blisters that tend to break open, ooze and become crusty
● Red, swollen skin that may leak pus
Treatment
Self Treatment:
For self-treatment, you could do the following:
● Wash the infected area twice a day with warm water and antibacterial soap. Ensure that you use a fresh cloth and towel each time.
● Take one teaspoon of table salt mixed with two cups of water on a washcloth and place it on your skin.
● Try to avoid shaving, scratching, and wearing tight clothes over the infected area.
Medication
● If the folliculitis is caused by bacteria, antibiotic creams may be prescribed. Pills may be prescribed in severe cases.
● If it is caused by fungus then antifungal creams, shampoos, or pills may be given.
● Use of corticosteroid cream helps in the case of swelling due to folliculitis.
Specialist
The aforementioned treatment for folliculitis is sufficient. In case the above treatments do not work, your doctor might have to take a skin sample.
