Hemorrhoids or Piles are swollen or inflamed veins inside or around the anus and lower rectum. There are mainly two types of hemorrhoids, depending on their placement. External hemorrhoids form under the skin of the anus, whereas internal hemorrhoids form within the lining of the anus and lower rectum.
In a lot of cases, hemorrhoids occur without having any symptoms at all, If symptoms do develop, they are namely
Bleeding after a bowel movement
A lump around the anus
Itchy bottom
Slimy discharge after a bowel movement
Hemorrhoid falling out of the anusThe most common and effective treatment for hemorrhoids that cause unbearable pain and discomfort is hemorrhoids surgery.
It is important to inform your doctor if you are on any medications. You will be asked to fast for a few hours before the surgery and an enema may also be prescribed. You should also avoid smoking at least 2 weeks prior to the surgery.
The procedure for a piles surgery (Hemorrhoidectomy) takes place in the following manner –
Inspection: A tool known as a retractor is inserted into the anus and rectum so the doctor can inspect hemorrhoids properly.
Identification: After hemorrhoid has been identified, it is held tightly with a small clamp and pulled away from the anal muscle.
Excision: An incision is then made in the tissue around the hemorrhoid to cut it away from the muscles. The swollen vein inside is tied up tightly to prevent excessive bleeding. The hemorrhoid is removed and the same process is repeated, for any more hemorrhoids.
Closure: The edges of the skin may be left open or closed. The anal area is cleaned and covered with an antiseptic dressing.
