What Is A Hernia Surgery?

Hernia is the bulging of an organ through an abnormal opening in the body. It occurs when pressure is put on an organ leading it to protrude through the wall muscle that is containing it.

Hernia surgery is the process that repairs the weak spots in the abdominal wall of organs by pushing the bulge back inside the body part that contains it. It is also known as a herniorrhaphy.

What Is A Mesh?

A mesh is a medical device to support the damaged tissues surrounding the hernia(s) during the healing process.

Why is Hernia Surgery performed?

Hernia surgery helps to repair the weakness in the abdominal wall muscles so no part of the body can push through it. The chances of a hernia occurring again post-surgery are very less. The doctor may recommend a Hernia surgery if you are facing the following symptoms –

  • TreatmentSwelling around the abdomen
  • TreatmentChange in color of the bulge
  • TreatmentPressure or weakness in the groin
  • TreatmentHeartburn
  • TreatmentNausea
  • TreatmentAching sensation around the bulge
  • TreatmentDifficulty in swallowing
  • TreatmentBowel obstruction
  • TreatmentPain while lifting or bending over
  • TreatmentHeavy feeling in the abdomen

Types Of Hernia Surgery

Open surgery – An open surgery is a process in which a cut is made in the body at the exact location of the hernia. The bulge is put back in its place and the weak spot in the abdominal wall is stitched back together.

Laparoscopic surgery – During laparoscopic surgery, small incisions are made that help for the incisions of medical tools that are required to complete the process.

How To Prepare For A Hernia Surgery?

You will be required to wear loose and comfortable clothing on the day of surgery. It is important to inform your doctor if you are on any medications. Additional instructions will be provided by the doctor based on your condition and the nature of the surgery.

How Is Hernia Surgery Performed?

Prior to the surgery, you will be asked to change into a gown provided by the hospital. Once you are admitted to the OR, local anesthesia will be provided based on the surgery.

Then an incision will be made next to the line of the groin ligament and will perform the surgery on the hernia sac. The surgeon will push the protruding organs back into their original place during the surgery. The part where the incision was made will be stitched up and closed using suitable dressing.
