Also known as muscle cramps, muscle spasms happen when a muscle involuntarily and forcibly contracts. Spasms usually stay for around 15 seconds and most common in the thighs or calves. They are usually caused by overexertion or overuse of a muscle. Another reason can be dehydration. Though it is completely harmless, it may make the movement of the part temporarily difficult due to residual pain.
