A Basic Guide to Pyrexia (Fever)

A medical condition involving a temporary increase in a person’s body temperature, often caused due to an illness.

Contrary to popular belief, fever is not a disease. It occurs because your body is trying to kill the foreign bacteria or virus that is trying to harm your body.

It can be diagnosed through thermometers. Normal body temperature is 98.6° F (37° C). During fever, it generally rises to 103°F (39.44° C). Chest X-rays and blood tests can also be used.

Symptoms

Sweating: Waking up with sweats; and in some cases, shivers and chills.
Physical pain: In the form of headaches and muscle aches
Loss of appetite
Irritability
General weakness

Treatment

Self-care:
An individual should be kept comfortable and not overdressed. Tepid (85° F or 30° C) water baths or sponge baths help in bringing down a fever. Consumption of fluids is recommended while caffeine and alcohol are to be avoided.

Medicines:
Medicines are used in case of a high fever, or a low fever which causes discomfort. However, one should be careful with the dosage of the medicines. Consumption of the same is not recommended for children.
