73 years ago, we achieved freedom from slavery, tyranny, and injustice. Years later, we are still being enslaved! We are being enslaved by our modern yet debilitating lifestyles. We have become so engrossed in the rat race that unhealthy practices have become a norm for us.
This Independence Day let us do more than celebrating our country’s freedom. Let us pledge to free ourselves from a bad lifestyle. On 15th August we got freedom. On this day, let us promise ourselves to get freedom from these 15 bad habits:
1. Spending too much time on the phone
Put your phone down. Period! The texts, games and social media updates will be there later. The people in front of you won’t be. Smartphones have replaced a lot of things, don’t let it replace your relationships.
2. Addiction to video games
WHO has classified video game addiction as a real mental health disorder. This Independence Day, let’s try making it a healthy gaming hobby rather than having a dependency. Indulge in pursuits that are enjoyable and help you develop a skill or two.
3.Not drinking enough water
In our fast-paced life, we often forget to drink ample water. Water is the most essential resource for our body that many of us ignore. Keep reminders that push you to hydrate yourself throughout the day. Aim for 8 glasses of water a day.
4. Drinking too much tea and coffee
Cut down your caffeine intake. If you drink a lot of tea and coffee, in the long run, you may get insomnia, digestive issues, and high blood pressure. Caffeine causes alertness but when it leaves your system, you are bound to experience rebound fatigue.
5. Smoking and drinking alcohol regularly
Even a child knows that alcohol is the mother of all bad habits. If you are stressed or sad, there are other ways to vent off. If your happy, there are other ways to celebrate. Do not play with your life by indulging in excessive smoking and alcohol.
6. Eating junk food
Processed or junk food is cheap and tastes good. If you’re a regular eater, you may already be facing symptoms such as overeating, obesity, mood swings, & insomnia. This Independence Day, let’s switch to clean eating before it’s too late.
7. Having an inactive lifestyle
“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” If you sit at your desk all day long and go home just to sleep, then you are at risk of developing obesity. Fix your sedentary lifestyle by walking more, taking the stairs, doing chores, dancing…anything will work.
8. Not having enough fruits and vegetables
In our hectic schedule, we forget to eat fruits and vegetables. These foods provide us with essential nutrients that no other processed food can. Be mindful from about your diet and include fresh fruits and vegetables whenever you can.
9. Cyberbullying and trolling
Don’t bully. Don’t troll. Be conscious of what you post. If someone bullies you online, don’t respond, keep a record of the act, block the person and finally report it to site providers.
10. Wasting water & food
We’re aware that in the coming few years, most major cities of India will have no groundwater left. This Independence Day, let’s do our bit every day to save water and reuse it wherever needed. Also, let’s pledge not to waste food and feed those who are needful.
11. Sleeping late
Ditch the habit of watching Netflix till late hours. A good night’s sleep is very important for your health. When you sleep well and on time, your memory improves, your stress lowers and you steer clear from weight gain.
12. Sleeping without removing makeup
Ladies just stop this habit! Your laziness will take a toll on your skin. Clogged pores, acne, blackheads, wrinkles, rashes—the list is endless. We agree you have a hectic life but spare 5 minutes of your time and remove your makeup before you drift off to sleep.
13. Listening to loud music on headphones
Playing loud music on headphones can damage your hearing. If you observe a ringing in your ears, it is an obvious sign that the damage has begun. Be mindful. And if people next to you can hear what you’re playing, the sound is undeniably too loud.
14. Indulging in social media a lot
This Independence Day, pledge to reduce your dose of social media. Not everything you do needs to be public. Quit comparing your life to others. All that glitters is not gold. Do not believe everything you see.
Watching an entire season of your favourite TV show at a stretch is doing more damage than disrupting your sleep. Read here what binge-watching does to your brain. If you are a devoted binge-watcher, try balancing your habit with other leisure activities.
