ESR blood test indirectly measures the degree of inflammation or tissue damage in the body. Higher than normal levels of ESR suggest a disease such as:
1. Bacterial, viral or fungal infections
2. Autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus
3. Inflammatory bowel disease.
4. In rare cases, some types of cancer.
However, keep in mind that the ESR test only indicates general inflammation in the body. It doesn't pinpoint any specific disease. If your ESR levels are high, the doctor will prescribe additional tests to diagnose your specific disease or health condition.
