What is the thyroid gland?

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped located in the base of the neck. It is an endocrine gland that secretes multiple vital hormones. The most important hormones are thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), tetraiodothyronine (T4), and triiodothyronine (T3).

What are the symptoms of a thyroid gland disorder?

Some common signs and symptoms of a thyroid disorder are:

  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Body weakness
  • Weight gain/loss
  • Hair loss
  • Inflammation of the thyroid gland
  • Anxiety

What are the common types of thyroid disorders?

There are 5 types of thyroid disorders:

Hyperthyroidism – A condition when the thyroid gland produces an excess of T3 or T4

Hypothyroidism – A condition when the thyroid gland does not secrete enough thyroid hormones

Goiter – A condition that causes swelling in the neck due to inflammation of the thyroid gland

Hashimoto’s disease – A disorder when the immune system attacks the thyroid gland

Grave’s disease An autoimmune disorder that causes an overactive thyroid gland

Why is a thyroid test important?

A thyroid test is done to measure the levels of thyroid hormones. The test can determine whether your thyroid hormones are overactive, underactive or normal. Low TSH levels indicate that your thyroid gland is making too many hormones (hyperthyroidism) whereas high TSH levels mean fewer hormones are being produced (hypothyroidism). The doctor will prescribe medication on the basis of the hormonal levels and are modified accordingly.
