Workplace Stress In India Is Rising! Is Mental Health Being Neglected?

Workplace stress is a growing epidemic in our country, if not looked at, will lead to severe consequences.

Did you know that 95% of Indian millennials aged 18-34 are under stress? A survey conducted by a reputable health insurance firm suggested that this percentage is higher than the global average of 86% and as surprising as this may sound, the main trigger for stress amongst most Indians is work. What’s more jaw-dropping is the fact that nearly 75% of Indians are not comfortable in consulting a medical professional for help.

But the saddest part of our society is that we ‘normalize’ stress. It is a grave mistake to believe that office stress is a part of your routine. Workplace stress is a growing epidemic in our country, if not looked at, will lead to severe consequences.

There are 3 types of workplace stress

Stress from fear

This stress is triggered when you are afraid of the responsibility you’ve been given. You may experience a change in appetite, muscle tension and have trouble sleeping. In this scenario, sharing your feelings with someone close to you can prove to be helpful.

Acute stress

This is situational stress and happens due to a specific event. It is triggered when unreasonable demands are made in the workplace. The stress goes away after the requirements are met but the negative feelings associated with acute stress needs attention.

Chronic stress

This is the worst kind of workplace stress. This stress makes you intellectually, emotionally and physically exhausted. It follows a person day in and day out and deserves immediate medical attention.

Warning signs you must not ignore

  • Feeling undervalued
  • Putting on weight
  • Having insomnia
  • Getting irritated or angry easily
  • Fatigue
  • Social isolation
  • Increased smoking & alcohol consumption
  • Acne or hair fall
  • Body pain or headaches
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Losing interest in partner

Take care of your health

If you show any of these symptoms or if you’re overwhelmed at work, it’s time you seek help. There is no shame in consulting a professional. Your mental well-being is more important than your job, remember that. Health is the real wealth.

There are also some techniques that you can adopt to prevent workplace stress:

  • Get up from our seat after every hour. Stretch your legs or take a brief walk.
  • Ditch ordering food online. Get home-cooked food.
  • Get more omega-3 fatty acids. They are known to uplift mood and relieve stress.
  • Develop a sleep routine. Sleep and wake up at a specific time.
  • Develop positive relationships with your colleagues.
  • Stay away from technology when you’re with your family.
  • Take up a hobby you always wanted to pursue.
  • Regularly practice breathing exercises.
  • Be more organized.

Workplaces should focus on employee mental health

Companies should proactively strive to create a healthier work environment. Give your employees tools that will help them alleviate their stress. In doing so, you will not only improve the work-life harmony of your employees but also add long-term benefits to the organization. A healthy and happy employee equals better performance, increased productivity and low attrition. Your business will perform better and eventually contribute to the country’s rising economy.
