X – Ray Knee Merchant View is an X-ray scan of the patella or the knee cap taken when the patient is lying down in a supine position, with no rotation of the pelvis.
What is X – Ray Knee Merchant View?
The X – Ray Knee Merchant View of the knee cap or patella involves only the patella and femur. This method is used in examining cases such as patellar fracture and patellofemoral arthritis and pain.
How is X – Ray Knee Merchant View performed?
While performing the X – Ray Knee Merchant View procedure, the patient is requested to lie down in a supine position with the knees at the edge of the examination table. The knees are bent at 45 degrees and the feet are positioned on a reclining platform placed below.[3,5]
- The detector overhead is placed over the upper body of the patient and angled 30 degrees from the horizontal line or 160 degrees from the vertical axis.
- The central ray is shot at this angle towards the base of the patella, making sure the toes are not obstructing the way.
Side effects/risks of X – Ray Knee Merchant View
Although there’s some risk to the body with any exposure to radiation while undergoing the X – Ray Knee Merchant View procedure, the amount of radiation used in a knee X-ray is not harmful in general. However, the patient needs to be aware of the total radiation he or she would be exposed to. Note that children are more sensitive to radiation than adults.
