Sm/RNP antibody test is used to determine the presence of antibodies to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and ribonucleoprotein antibodies (RNP) in the body.
What is Sm/RNP Antibody test?
Sm/RNP antibody test is used to detect the presence of antibodies to Sm and RNP. presence of antibodies to Sm is a marker for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Presence of RNP antibodies is observed in SLE and other diseases like scleroderma, polymyositis, and Sjögren’s syndrome. Hence, the Sm/RNP antibody test aids the diagnoses of specific diseases by determining the presence of antibodies.
Why is Sm/RNP Antibody test suggested?
Sm/RNP test is suggested for aiding the diagnosis of the following:
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).
- Sjögren’s syndrome.
- Mixed connective tissue disease.
How is the Sm/RNP Antibody test performed?
Following is the procedure of an Sm/RNP antibody test:
- A blood sample is taken for the test.
- Alcohol is used to clean the skin.
- The technician wraps an elastic band above the elbow so that the veins can be easily seen.
- The needle is injected near your elbow or the back of your hand and blood is collected in a plain tube attached to the needle. The needle is ejected from the skin.
The tube is labeled and sent to the lab where the Sm/RNP antibody blood test is performed on it.
What are the parameters measured in the Sm/RNP Antibody test?
If the RNP antibody value is 29 AU/mL or less then it is negative and if it’s 41 AU/mL or greater it’s positive. Similarly, an Sm value of 29 AU/mL or less is negative and greater than 41 AU/mL is positive2.
Preparation before performing Sm/RNP Antibody test
Sm/RNP Antibody test does not require any particular preparation.
Post-care after Sm/RNP Antibody test
No particular post-care is required after Sm/RNP antibody blood test but it is advised to inform your doctor if you feel abnormal after the test.
