X – Ray Right Femur Thigh AP & LAT View

Overview Brief

The femur or thigh bone is the strongest and single largest bone of the human body; any bone injuries to the upper leg are examined using Right Femur Thigh AP and LAT View X – Rays.

What Are Right Femur Thigh AP and LAT View X – Rays?

Bone injuries and deformities of the upper leg are examined using Right Femur Thigh Anteroposterior (AP) and Lateral (LAT) View X – Rays.

These X-rays give a complete picture of the entire femur and other connective tissues associated with it between the hip and knee. Causes for pain, limp, swelling, tenderness and deformities in the thigh region can be ascertained through these X-rays. The X-ray procedure can help detect a broken femur and its alignment after it has been set. In addition, cysts, tumors, or other diseases in the femur, including later stages of bone infections can be detected using these X-rays.

If surgery of the upper leg is required, Right Femur Thigh AP and LAT View X – Rays may be taken to plan for the operation and assess the results of the procedure.

How Are Right Femur Thigh AP and LAT View X-Rays Performed?

X-Ray Right Femur Thigh AP and LAT View is performed using a large overhead X-ray device suspended from the ceiling as follows:

  • The patient is made to lie down on the examination table below the X-ray device.
  • Patient’s thigh is placed on a digital flat detector in a diagonal position.
  • The X-ray beam tube is tilted by 15 degrees to directly aim the center of the guide beam toward the center of the digital detector and the midpoint of the patient’s thigh.
  • A supporting sponge block is placed below to hold the patient’s leg in the right position.
  • Holding the leg still for a couple of seconds is necessary to avoid a blurry image.

At times, in emergency departments, ICUs, and operating rooms, portable X-rays are used to capture thigh X-rays, and the patient is positioned upright.
