The anteroposterior view of an X-ray refers to an image in which beams are observed to pass from the front to the back. The oblique view of the foot shows a part of the three-view series that examines the phalanges, metatarsal, and tarsal bones which constitute the foot.

In the anteroposterior view, the patient is positioned as follows:

  • The patient can be supine or upright according to his comfort.
  • The affected left leg should be flexed so that the plantar aspect of the foot rests on the image plantar.

In the oblique view, the patient is positioned in the following manner:

  • They may be asked to lie supine or upright according to their comfort.
  • The affected left leg should be flexed so that the plantar aspect of the foot rests on the image receptor.
  • The foot should be medially rotated until the plantar surface sits at an angle of 45 degrees to the image receptor.
