- An IV is inserted to inject sedation, pain medication and contrast.
- Coils that generate and detect radio pulses are placed around the head, to increase the quality of the images.
- The table slides inside the MRI magnetic field, where multiple images of the brain are produced.
- Gadolinium contrast solution is injected through the IV.
- Another series of images are captured as the contrast passes through the brain.
The test is performed in multiple sequences. It takes around 60 minutes.

It is a safe procedure as it does not use x-rays or ionizing radiation.
