Overview Brief

Phenytoin is an anticonvulsant substance used in the treatment of generalized tonic-clonic and complex partial seizures. It is known to have a narrow therapeutic window.

What Is Phenytoin Test?

Phenytoin is used to treat and prevent the recurrence of certain types of seizures.

Phenytoin blood testing is generally used to maintain the narrow therapeutic range essential for the ideal functioning of Phenytoin. If Phenytoin levels in the blood are too low, the patient may experience a relapse of seizures; however if they are too high, the patient may experience symptoms associated with Phenytoin toxicity. These may include loss of balance and falling, involuntary eye movement from side to side(nystagmus), confusion, slurred speech, tremors, and low blood pressure.

Phenytoin’s total effect on each and every patient can be unpredictable. Hence maintaining a therapeutic level of Phenytoin in the bloodstream can be a challenge.

Why Is Phenytoin Test Suggested?

Phenytoin blood tests are suggested to:

  • Establish an individual therapeutic concentration.
  • Aid in the diagnosis of clinical Phenytoin toxicity.
  • Assess patient compliance in Phenytoin treatment.
  • To monitor adjustments in Phenytoin dosage.

How Is Phenytoin Test Performed?
