Treponema Pallidum Heamagglutinition

Overview

The Treponema Pallidum Haemagglutination test is one which helps to screen and diagnose syphilis, a disease caused by the Treponema Pallidum bacteria.

What is Treponema Pallidum Haemagglutination (TPHA)?

The Treponema Pallidum bacteria causes a deadly disease called Syphilis. This disease is transmitted via sexual contact with a carrier. The THPA test is carried out using an indirect agglutination assay to detect the Treponema bacteria in the body.

Why is TPHA suggested?

The Treponema Pallidum Haemagglutination test is usually recommended and performed when symptoms manifest in men or women. Symptoms appear in the form of rashes, in the genital area or in the mouth.  The test is usually recommended to rule out:

  • risk of contracting an STD
  • in case of a positive AIDS diagnosis
  • routine testing during pregnancy

How is TPHA performed?

The TPHA test is carried out in a lab based on the agglutination of erythrocytes in the blood, sensitized by a specific antigen – T. pallidum. The following methods can be used to get an indication:

  • Test cell suspensions
  • Control cell suspensions
  • Positive control serum

IF there is a reaction, it means that a person has an active infection or has been successfully treated.

What are the parameters measured in TPHA?

Talk to your doctor to find out about the parameters measured in TPHA.

Preparation before performing TPHA

There is no specific preparation for a THPA test. Patients are expected to go to a lab to get their blood drawn so that an assay can be created in the lab. Depending on a patient’s general health, doctors may advise fasting.

Post-care after TPHA

After getting tested, patients are prescribed Penicillin as a cure. They are to be monitored long-term for recurrence of the disease. Patients with TPHA and HIV are prescribed other medication for treatment. Patients who have received treatment should ensure they

  • Get good nutrition.
  • Go for regular check ups.

Sample types in TPHA tests

Blood samples are taken from patients to run the following tests and detect levels of Syphilis in the body.

  • RPR – Rapid Plasma Reagin test.
  • ELISA – Enzyme Immuno Assay.

Side effects/risks of THPA

The THPA test helps in diagnosing and treating syphilis.  The side-effects of syphilis can be quite lethal – many patients who are in the tertiary stages can go blind and deaf, suffer from neurological disorders as well. Since it is a chronic condition, it is a good idea to get tested as soon as symptoms appear.
