Phospholipid Syndrome Profile

Overview Brief

Antiphospholipid syndrome(APS) is an autoimmune disorder where antibodies act on phospholipids in blood cells causing internal blood clots and thrombophilia. It is especially harmful to pregnant women.

What Is Phospholipid Syndrome Profile?

A spectrum of autoantibodies directed against cellular phospholipid components can cause uncontrolled internal clots in veins and arteries due to APS disorder.

During an autoimmune disorder like APS, the body’s immune system makes proteins known as antibodies which mistakenly attack its own cells or tissues. In APS, antibodies attack the lipid-proteins found in the outermost layer of cells and platelets interfering with the blood clotting. This process results in blood clots(thrombotic episodes), a low number of platelets (thrombocytopenia), and pregnancy complications such as pre-eclampsia, and recurrent miscarriages.

Phospholipid syndrome is associated with risk of inappropriate blood clot formation and is considered an excessive clotting disorder(thrombophilia).

Why Is Phospholipid Syndrome Profile Suggested?

Phospholipid syndrome profile is used to identify the following antibodies in blood which activate the blood clotting pathway:

  • Lupus Anticoagulant.
  • Anticardiolipin
  • Anti-B2 Glycoprotein I.

How Is Phospholipid Syndrome Profile Performed?

Phospholipid Syndrome Profile is performed by obtaining a blood sample from a vein of an arm by pricking and testing for abnormal immune proteins.

What Are The Parameters Measured In Phospholipid Syndrome Profile?

Presence of abnormal immune proteins in the bloodstream are parameters tested in Phospholipid Syndrome Profile.
