Ceruloplasmin

Overview

Ceruloplasmin test is a test to check ferroxidase enzyme that in humans is encoded by the CP gene. Ceruloplasmin is the major copper-carrying protein in the blood and plays a major role in iron metabolism. It is made in the liver.

What is Ceruloplasmin?

Ceruloplasmin test is conducted to check the level of ferroxidase enzyme in the blood. It is tested to measure how much copper-containing protein is in your blood.This test is usually done to diagnose the problems related to copper in our blood. 

Why is Ceruloplasmin suggested?

It is suggested that a person is suspected of low level of ceruloplasmin in his blood if they go through the following symptoms:

  • Trouble speaking or swallowing
  • Anemia and behavior changes
  • Low platelets and WBC’s
  • Osteoporosis and Arthritis
  • Brown rings around eyes

How is Ceruloplasmin performed?

Ceruloplasmin test is done via

  • Blood tests are conducted by piercing a needle into the skin to check copper amount found in the body.
  • Urine is also tested to check the amount of copper in it.

What parameters are measured in Ceruloplasmin?

The parameters measured in Ceruloplasmin tests are

  • Decreased ceruloplasmin in blood and urine must indicate Wilson Disease.
  • It is also checked that is there any problem related to hepatitis especially if one is ill.

Preparation before Ceruloplasmin

No prior preparation is needed before ceruloplasmin test, however, you may need to

  • The doctor may recommend to fast or take juice or glucose.
  • Avoid the medications for other diseases

Post-care after Ceruloplasmin

 If the Ceruloplasmin test is negative one must

  • Avoid food like liver, nuts, chocolate etc.
  • Take medications like penicillamine or zinc acetate.
  • Go for regular check up.
