The TM joints or the temporomandibular joints connect the jawbone to the skull. An NCCT scan of the TM joint refers to the detailed imaging test of the TM joint.

What is an NCCT TM Joint?

NCCT scan or non-contrast computerized tomography is the higher version of X-ray. NCCT of TM joint is an imaging technique for assessing suspected temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. The scan helps the doctor diagnose, treat and prepare a plan of action. No contrast medicine is required for such scans. The scan is done to detect any anomalies and pathological conditions.

How is an NCCT TM Joint performed?

The procedure a radiologist follows for an NCCT TM Joint is:

  • The patient is asked to remove any metal accessories.
  • The scan is done in a closed-mouth and open-mouth position.
  • During the scan, the machine sends a beam which records an image of the TM joint for a more accurate analysis.

Risks of the NCCT TM Joint

There are no major risks during NCCT TM Joint, however, keep in mind to:

  • Inform the doctor if you are pregnant, to take necessary precautions.
  • Multiple NCCTs might cause exposure to a slightly higher amount of radiation.

Preparation before performing an NCCT TM Joint

The test does not require any significant preparation. However:

  • Avoid wearing any jewelry, eyeglasses or any metal objects.
  • You may be asked to wear a lead apron to avoid exposure of radiation to the sensitive parts of your body.
  • You might be asked to brush your teeth before you come.

Post-care after the NCCT TM Joint

The standard NCCT scans have a minimum or no side-effects allowing one to resume everyday activities.

The TM joint is one of the body parts that that cannot be scanned using traditional imaging because the joint is small and the fact that it is partly concealed by the dense bony constructions of the skull, resulting in overlaps of images.
