The diagnosis of the testis through magnetic resonance imaging is beneficial to study scrotal disorders by using radio waves.
MRI is an imaging procedure of viewing the cross-sectional areas of the internal parts of the body. It identifies the diseases related to the testis. This method does not involve ionizing radiations. Therefore, it is more useful than the computed tomography method. MRI can detect diseases such as testicular cancer, scrotal ischemia, swelling and congenital disorders. It is also helpful to study the anatomy of the scrotum and the penis. Magnetic resonance uses a strong magnetic field to identify the structures and is a non- invasive, painless method of analysis.
The MRI of the testis is simple and easy to perform.
- Give the patient a contrast dye if needed, through an injection or orally.
- Make the patient comfortably lie down on the table.
- Place a coil or a frame, which is capable of transmitting and producing magnetic waves near the testis.
- After proper arrangements, the table advances into the magnetic field.
- The computer takes pictures of the body part concerned.
The total scan time is 15-90 minutes.
There are certain risks involved due to the high magnetic field and contrast dye.
- The magnetic field may affect the developing foetus.
- The magnetic field may affect the patients having metal implants in the body.
- The contrast dye may produce certain allergies like redness and itching in the skin.
- The dye may also cause diarrhoea and vomiting.
Prior preparation for the test includes:
- Remove any jewellery or accessories from the body.
- Inform the doctor of pacemakers and artificial valves in the body.
- Do not undergo the test in case of pregnancy.
- Remove metal implants like dentures.
- Do not consume food before 4 hours of the test.
- Inform the doctor about allergies and certain medicine intakes.
Post care steps include:
- Follow the instructions given by the doctor carefully.
- The patient can resume normal activities.
