Overview

Fibrinogen test is a blood test used to determine the level of fibrinogen in your blood. Fibrinogen test is also known as Factor I assay or Hypofibrinogenemia test and fibrinogen is known as Factor I. Fibrinogen is a protein for the blood clot formation.

What is Fibrinogen?

Fibrinogen test is a test to measure the level of fibrinogen and how well it works which is an essential protein for the blood clot formation. Fibrinogen is produced by the liver and released with several other coagulation factor proteins. It is then converted from soluble fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin thread. It works like a fibrin thread net on an injury to stop bleeding.

Why is Fibrinogen suggested?

It is suggested if a person is suspected to develop symptoms like

  • Thrombosis which is the formation of blood clot inside the blood vessel.
  • Abnormal blood clotting and abnormal bleeding
  • Disseminated Intravascular Coagulations
  • Abnormal PT or PTT results
  • Frequent nose bleedings

How is Fibrinogen performed?

The Fibrinogen test is performed in the following way

  • Blood sample from veins in the arm are sent to laboratories.
  • There fibrinogen concentration are reacted if it rosed and causes inflammation may indicate high fibrinogen level.

What parameters are measured in Fibrinogen?

The parameters measured in the test involve

  • Measuring the level of fibrinogen in the blood.
  • It can be increased due to haemorrhage, inherited fibrinogen deficiency.

Preparation before Fibrinogen

Preparing for the test may involve

  • Fasting till the test.
  • Stoppage of several medications.

Post-care after Fibrinogen

After the Fibrinogen test the patients should

  • Drink plenty of water and take some rest.
  • If you have abnormal fibrinogen take further tests.
  • Take regular check up.

Sample type in Fibrinogen

Fibrinogen test requires only blood sample to know about your fibrinogen level.

Side effects/risks of Fibrinogen
