Overview Brief

CT (computerized tomography) scan is a medical procedure that uses X-ray technology and advanced computer analysis to create a detailed picture of the neck area.

What is a CT scan for neck pain?

A CT scan will give a detailed picture of the neck and the surrounding areas.

The CT scan can help detect the sign of faulty bones and bone tumors. It also helps the doctors accurately diagnose the injury to the neck bones.

The amount of exposure to radiation is much more in a CT scan than in regular x-rays.

How is CT scan performed?

Following is the procedure for the CT scan test:

  • The technologist will ask you to lie flat on your back.
  • If contrast is used, it will be given through a vein (IV) in your arm or veins.
  • You might experience warm sensations all over your body.
  • You’ll go through the machine several times. Only your neck and head will be covered by the scanner.

There should be no movement during this procedure.

Side effects/risks of CT scans performed.

Following are some of the risk factors associated with CT scans related the neck pain:

  • Allergy reaction – Excessive exposure to radiation increases the risk of kidney failures and cancer and causes several allergies.
  • Birth Defects – Exposure to radiation during pregnancy increases the risk of birth defects. However, it is minimal in case of neck and head scanning.
