Also known as peripheral neuritis, it is often related to diabetes but can also result from injuries, infections, and exposure to toxins. Damage to each kind of peripheral nerves interrupts communication between the brain and related parts of the body. The sensory nerves are connected to the skin, motor nerves connected to the muscles and autonomic nerves are connected to the inner organs.


Ages affected: Ages between 18-40: often, 40-60+: most often


Symptoms:


Self-diagnosable
Symptoms include pain, a pins-and-needlessensation, numbness, and weakness.


People may experience:
Pain areas: back, face, foot, hands, or thigh
Pain circumstances: can occur at night
Muscular: cramping, difficulty walking, muscle weakness, problems with coordination, or loss of muscle
Sensory: uncomfortable burning, over sensitivity, touch or pain sensitivity
Also common: poor balance, slow reflexes, tingling sensation in feet and fingers, weakness, or sexual dysfunction (especially, in men)


Treatment:


Medication: Over-the-counter (OTC) pain medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, can help in moderating the pain. Medical treatments maybe opted, in case of severe disorders.
