Overview

Scrotal varices are enlargement of veins in the scrotum. In all the males, there is a structure called ‘spermatic cord’ which contains veins, arteries, tubes, and nerves. It circulates blood from and to testicles. Veins in ‘spermatic cord’ carry blood to and from testicles to the heart and the valves in the veins which regulate the blood flow in the right direction. If valves fail, the blood could flow in the reverse direction. The ‘backed-up’ blood could collect in the pools in veins, which cause the veins to swell and stretch and this result in the formation of a varicocele. They occur in 15% of the males aged between 15 years to 25 years. They are present in the left side of the scrotum. Although it is rare they can be present on both the sides.

Scrotal Varices Symptoms

The symptoms of varicocele are the following:

  • Discomfort in testicles
  • Feeling of dragging or heaviness in the scrotum
  • The dilated veins present in the scrotum feels like spaghetti or worms.

Scrotal Varices Causes

They develop due to defective valves present in the scrotal veins, above testicles. The valves regulate blood flow from and to the testicles. When the normal flow of blood does not take place, the blood backs up and causes the dilation of the veins. This results during the puberty when testicles experience rapid growth and require a lot of blood. In 85% of the cases, it develops in the left area of the testicle. Poor blood circulation brought about by scrotal varices causes high blood temperature and thereby raises the temperature of testes that can serve as the barrier to the sperm production and thereby destroy the sperm which is created.

Infertility and Scrotal Varices

One of the major complications of scrotal varices is infertility in men. Men suffering from scrotal varices cannot become fathers and they suffer from depression, low self-esteem, and stigma.

Diagnosis of Scrotal Varices

Scrotal varices can be detected in a routine physical examination when the doctor examines the testicles in the standing position of the males. The smaller sized scrotal varices are detected by further testing. The scrotal varices specialist would suggest diagnostic procedures such as thermography or Doppler ultrasonography for detecting small-sized scrotal varices.

Understanding Scrotal Varices

Scrotal varices develop due to the enlargement of the scrotal veins due to the backed-up blood in the veins caused by the failure of the valves.

Scrotal Varices Treatment

Treatment is needed in case of infertility or if scrotal varices result in discomfort, persistent pain or appreciable testicular atrophy. You can come across accomplished general surgeons at mfine who can carry out effective surgery for the treatment of the scrotal varices. The surgical treatment includes the tying off affected vein for redirecting blood flow towards the normal veins. The surgery could be laparoscopic or open and the patients can get back to the daily activities within the two days.
