Hemoglobin A1C

About

What is Hemoglobin A1C test?
Hemoglobin A1C is a blood test done to measure the average levels of sugar or glucose in the blood for the past three months. This is considered to be the primary test to check for prediabetes and diabetes. Glucose binds to the hemoglobin in the blood, and the test can check whether these levels are healthy or abnormal. It is also known as the HbA1C test.

When is Hemoglobin A1C test recommended?
The Hemoglobin A1C test is a simple blood test and can be done at any time of the day. Often, it is recommended to be done twice in a year. For people with diabetes, the frequency may be increased to four times a year for effective management.

Preparing for Hemoglobin A1C test
This is a standard blood test and does not require any special preparation.

Understanding Hemoglobin A1C test results
The hemoglobin A1C test level is reported as a percentage. For a healthy person without any underlying glucose condition, the recommended level is between 4% and 5.6%. However, if the level is between 5.7% and 6.4%, it could be an indicator of prediabetes where the glucose levels are higher than normal but can still be reversed with lifestyle and medication. A test result of 6.5% or more could signify a diabetic condition and may require additional tests for a confirmed diagnosis.
