Binish Ahmed

If you are experiencing troubling symptoms that indicate PCOD, then this test is a must for you.

What is PCOD?

Also known as polycystic ovarian disease, PCOD or PCOS is a hormonal disorder that leads to the formation of cysts on the ovaries. Experts say that 1 in every 5 Indian women suffer from PCOD. It affects women who are of reproductive age (15-44 years).

What are the causes of PCOD?

In PCOD, high levels of androgens (male hormones) in the body prevent the ovaries from functioning normally. This leads to hormonal imbalance and the inability to make eggs normally. This condition can be caused by inherited genes, insulin resistance and inflammation.

What are the symptoms of PCOD?

  • Weight gain
  • Irregular periods
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Hair growth on body, face or chin
  • Acne
  • Anxiety

What happens in a PCOD panel?

There are two PCOD panels:

Basic

Blood sugar levels: High levels of sugar in the blood can indicate insulin resistance which can be due to PCOD.

Thyroid panel: Hormonal imbalance in PCOD can cause a thyroid disorder

Hormonal check: High levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and low levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is often seen in PCOD patients. High levels of testosterone (male hormones) in the body indicates PCOD.

Prolactin: PCOD patients have elevated prolactin levels

Advanced

Why take a PCOD panel?

If PCOD is neglected for a long time, it can lead to serious health conditions such as infertility, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, depression and even endometrial cancer. Along with this test, a physical exam, and a scan, your doctor will evaluate your signs and symptoms and make a proper diagnosis. The treatment plan will be devised based on all these parameters.
