Break Free From The Habit Of Mindless Eating

Dr. Bhavani A

Mindless eating is often associated with unexplained weight gain other than the medical causes of weight gain, of course.

You may be exercising daily or for a few days in a week but when you weigh yourself, you see you’re gaining more weight than losing. Has it happened to you yet? Can you gain a few extra pounds even after working out?
Yes, you can!
The culprit here can simply be your eating habits! Mindless eating is often associated with unexplained weight gain other than the medical causes of weight gain, of course.

It is said that the average person makes around 250 decisions about food every day. These decisions are mostly about convenience, price, and the taste of the food. Can you guess what’s missing then? It’s the calorie intake and the nature of foods that you are consuming. Have you ever analysed whether the food you are eating is healthy?

Based on how we function in today’s world, especially when it comes to our diet and food choices, a concept called ‘mindless eating’ has developed.

Mindless eating is when you are not focused on your food and you mostly eat when you aren’t really hungry. When you’re into mindless eating, you don’t even pay much attention to what’s on your plate and fork!

Signs that suggest you’re into Mindless Eating

You eat when you aren’t really hungry

Our lives are structured in such a way that we tend to eat even if we aren’t hungry. This mostly happens during social gatherings or family meetups. Worst of all, we always consume foods that are not really healthy for our bodies.

You eat while concentrating on other things

Have you ever had a meal where your focus is on your plate alone? No? Most of us do this and it’s not healthy. It’s important to know what you are eating. It’s not healthy to eat in front of the television or have your snack while surfing on the internet or watching something on Netflix. These distractions can lead to overeating.

You overeat when you are depressed

Another emerging cause of mindless eating is unhappiness. Working professionals are under a lot of stress and most of them go through depression. To fight these episodes of depression, people tend to binge eat on packaged foods, aerated drinks, ice cream, and everything that looks attractive on the outside.

You eat when bored

Eating to kill time is another example of mindless eating. Even when you aren’t hungry, you tend to binge eat just to pass time, by munching on some wafers or chocolates.

How to beat your mindless eating habits?

• Opt for healthy foods and keep them around you.
• Never eat directly from a package. Always take a portion of the food out on your plate.
• Break the fast first thing in the morning. Eat something hot.
• Avoid going more than 3-4 hours without having something to eat.

Healthy eating habits are hard to implement. If you try and focus on it every day, you’ll have a tab on what you are eating. This way, you’ll keep a watch on your food and your weight. It’s easy to put on extra pounds, and extremely difficult to shed that extra fat. You may be inviting diseases because of your eating habits alone.
